Stoicism at WorkA Stoic Workweek

Day 7

One skill, one life

You don't have a work self and a home self. You have one pair of eyes.

Look back at the week. The rejected ticket. The manager walking past. The coin you learned to test. The morning vote to stay down. Then last night's clipped reply at the dinner table. Different rooms, one skill — seeing the bare event before the story you staple on it. The week split it across surfaces so you could feel how wide it reaches, but it was never really two skills. It was always one, for one life.

That matters, because it's tempting to think clear sight is something you switch on at the loading dock and off at the door. It isn't. The nurse, the driver, the parent on the late feed — each is the same person all day, narrating the whole time.

Marcus kept pointing inward, never outward, for the thing worth having: "Look within. Within is the fountain of good, and it will ever bubble up, if thou wilt ever dig" (Meditations 7.59, Long). Not the right job, the right verdict, the right Saturday. Within.

Next week turns to what's actually yours to control. You'll find the digging gets easier once you've stopped mistaking the story for the fact.

Today

Name one place this week — work or home — where seeing the bare event changed what you did next. That's the skill. Carry it into Monday.
