Day 15

The gap before the run

There's a half-second before the reaction. That's where you live.

A customer raises their voice. The dispatch screen reassigns your route mid-shift. A coworker says the one thing that always lands wrong. Something happens, and a reaction is already loading — the jaw tightens, the comeback forms, the afternoon tilts. But there's a beat first. A thin gap between the thing landing and you moving on it. Most of us never notice the gap. We're out the door behind the impression before we knew it arrived.

Marcus Aurelius, running an empire and still coaching himself, marked exactly how reachable that gap is: "How easy it is to repel and to wipe away every impression which is troublesome or unsuitable, and immediately to be in all tranquillity" (Meditations 5.2, Long). Wipe it away — before it pulls you. The trick is not white-knuckling the reaction once it's running. It's catching the impression in the gap, while it's still just a thing that happened and not yet a thing you're doing.

This week is about that gap. Finding it, widening it, learning to act from inside it instead of from the far side.

The reaction feels automatic. It isn't. There's always a door before it. This week you learn to see the door.

Today

The next time something lands wrong, find the half-second before you react. Just notice it's there.
