Stoicism at WorkA Stoic Workweek

Day 25

See the thing as it is

Strip the dread off it and look at the actual task.

Attention isn't just staying on a thing. It's seeing the thing accurately — without the cloud of dread or story you've wrapped around it.

That report you've been avoiding. Look at what it actually is: a document, some numbers, an hour of focused work. The difficult customer on line two: a person, a problem, a few minutes of talking. We bloat these into monsters and then can't make ourselves start, because we're not looking at the task, we're looking at our fog about the task.

Marcus had a tool for cutting through it: "Make for thyself a definition or description of the thing which is presented to thee, so as to see distinctly what kind of a thing it is in its substance, in its nudity, in its complete entirety" (Meditations 3.11, Long). In its nudity — stripped of the menace you dressed it in. The double shift is hours and tasks, not a verdict on your whole life. The hard conversation is words exchanged, not a catastrophe.

The nurse who sees the wound plainly treats it better than the one who flinches. Same with any task you've been flinching from. Clear sight is half the work.

Today

Take the one thing you're dreading today and describe it in bare terms — what it literally is, no story. Then start it.
