Day 31
Wipe it out now
The judgment that's ruining your shift can be deleted on the spot.
Here's the practice that makes this week real, and it's smaller than you'd think.
Some task is sitting on you. The pile of dishes after a rush. The stack of charts before end of shift. The call you've been dreading since this morning. The weight you feel isn't in the dishes. It's in a sentence running underneath: this is too much, this is unfair, I can't.
Marcus put the whole method in two sentences: "If thou art pained by any external thing, it is not this thing that disturbs thee, but thy own judgement about it. And it is in thy power to wipe out this judgement now" (Meditations 8.47, Long). Notice the last word. Now. Not after you've vented, not once the shift ends. Now — the way you'd close a tab you didn't mean to open.
So try it as an actual move. Name the judgment riding on the task: this is too much. Then set it down and look at just the task: a sink of dishes, forty minutes, your two hands. The dishes didn't get lighter. But you're no longer carrying them and the story about them.
You won't always catch it. The skill is catching it once, on purpose, and feeling the difference.
Today
Pick one task you're dreading. Say the judgment under it, then wipe it and look at the bare work. Start there.
