Day 60

The obstacle is the material

The thing that wrecked your plan is the next thing to work with.

The reserve clause from yesterday leaves you holding the plan loosely. Today, what to do the moment the plan actually breaks — because it will. The shipment's late. The coworker quits mid-project. The tool you needed is checked out till Thursday. Your first instinct is to treat the obstacle as the end of the road, proof the decision was wrong. It isn't the end of the road. It's the road now.

Marcus wrote it without the bumper-sticker polish people quote today: "the mind converts and changes every hindrance to its activity into an aid; and so that which is a hindrance is made a furtherance to an act; and that which is an obstacle on the road helps us on this road" (Meditations 5.20, Long). Wordier than the slogans, and better for it — because he's not promising the obstacle disappears. He's saying the trained mind feeds on it. The blocked path becomes information. The delay becomes time you didn't know you'd use.

The line cook whose order gets killed and remakes the station cleaner. The electrician who finds the wiring wrong and now knows the building. The applicant who's passed over and learns what the role really wanted. None of them planned the obstacle. All of them turned it into the next move.

You can't see the end of the decision. But you can always see the next piece of material it just handed you.

Today

Take one thing that blocked you this week. Ask: what does this obstacle let me do, or learn, that the clear road wouldn't have?
