Stoicism at WorkA Stoic Workweek

Day 96

The bond is the work

Cooperation isn't a favor you're doing them.

Think about how a job actually gets handed across people. A nurse tells the next shift what to watch. A foreman walks the new guy through where the gas line runs. Someone answers the question you were too embarrassed to ask. None of that is in anyone's job description as such, and all of it is the job. Strip it out and the work doesn't happen.

We tend to file this under generosity, like the help we give is a kindness above and beyond the role. Cicero saw it as the thing that makes us human in the first place: "that bond of connection is reason and speech, which by the processes of teaching and learning, of communicating, discussing, and reasoning associate men together and unite them in a sort of natural fraternity" (De Officiis 1.50, Miller). Teaching, learning, talking it through — that's not extra. It's the cord that ties the work together.

This is the week's keystone. Cooperation isn't a favor you grant when you're feeling generous. It's what you're for. When you explain the thing, cover the gap, take the question, you're not being nice. You're doing the actual work, the part that holds the rest in place.

The bond is the job. Everything else hangs off it.

Today

Teach someone one thing you know that they don't — not as a favor, as the work.
