Stoicism at WorkA Stoic Workweek

Day 112

A part of the whole

One week, one move: see your place, then fill it.

Pull the week together. You saw the circles your job sits inside. You practiced pulling the far coworker close. You held your own lot without grabbing anyone else's, read what each role actually owed, and tested whether each small act fit the whole or tore at it. Then off the clock, you put the people at home back where they belong — near the front, not the leftover. One move all week, worn into different rooms: see the place you hold, and fill it well.

Marcus gave the whole thing its root: "I am a part of the whole which is governed by nature; next, I am in a manner intimately related to the parts which are of the same kind with myself" (Meditations 10.6, Long). A part — not the center, not a spare. And tied to the other parts, which is why doing your share is never just personal performance. It's what holds the thing together.

Next week narrows to one part in particular: honesty in small things. The padded number, the white lie, the thing you didn't quite mention. Because doing your part well is impossible if the part you hand over isn't true.

Today

Name the one place — work or home — where seeing yourself as a part, not the whole, would change what you do next. Do that.
