Day 124
The deed already paid you
The contribution was the reward. There isn't a second one coming.
This is the hard center of the week. Sooner or later you do something real for the group — you stay late to unjam the line, you train the new kid so the floor runs better, you fix the thing nobody will ever know was broken — and the credit goes elsewhere. The boss thanks the wrong person. The win gets attributed up the chain. And something in you curdles, because you gave and the world didn't pay.
Marcus, running an empire where the credit almost always flowed to someone else's statue, kept one line ready for exactly this. "Have I done something for the general interest? Well then, I have had my reward" (Meditations 11.4, Long). Not I will be rewarded. I have had it. Past tense. The contribution wasn't a deposit toward future recognition. It was already the whole payment.
That reframe is the keystone, because it pulls the floor out from under resentment. If the doing was the reward, then the recognition going sideways costs you nothing real. You already got paid the moment the line ran again.
You can want recognition. Most of us do. But you don't need it, and a week of giving credit away teaches you the difference.
Today
Do one thing for the good of the group expecting no credit at all. Tell yourself plainly: this already paid me.
