Day 127
When no one is checking
The work nobody will ever see is the realest test of it.
Some of your work gets watched. Most of it doesn't. The electrician who terminates the wire to code inside a wall that's about to be sealed over. The cleaner wiping behind the toilet where no inspector will ever look. The driver who logs the miles honestly when the system would never catch a shaved number. The closer who counts the till twice, alone, at midnight. This week is about that work — the part done right when nobody is keeping score, and nobody will thank you either way.
There's a counterfeit version of doing good, and it's worth naming first. It's the flashy favor that papers over a quiet wrong. Cicero saw it in the powerful men of his day, the ones who robbed one person to look generous to another: "nothing is generous, if it is not at the same time just" (De Officiis 1.43, Miller). A grand visible gesture sitting on top of a hidden injustice isn't integrity. It's performance.
So the move this week is to separate the two. Not the look of doing right — the thing itself, whether or not a single soul observes it.
Today
Pick one task today that no one will check. Do it to the same standard you'd use if your boss were standing over your shoulder.
