Day 248

The part they can't reassign

They can move you anywhere. They can't touch the part that decides how you go.

The promotion goes to the other candidate. The account you built gets handed to a new rep. After the reorg you're doing the same work for less recognition, in a worse spot, reporting to someone who wasn't there for the hard years. A demotion in everything but name. It's easy, in that chair, to feel like the whole of you has been marked down.

Marcus ran an empire and still rehearsed the line that keeps a person intact when the externals get rearranged: "Take me and cast me where thou wilt; for there I shall keep my divine part tranquil, that is, content, if it can feel and act conformably to its proper constitution" (Meditations 8.45, Long). Cast me where you will. The title, the desk, the territory — those they can assign and reassign. The part of you that chooses how to show up to the new spot is not on their org chart.

This is the week's move applied to the slow failure, the one that comes by memo instead of by blow. The setback rearranged your circumstances. It did not reach the thing that does your actual work, which is the steady, ungrand decision to do this job well from wherever you've been put.

Keep that part tranquil and you've kept the only ground that was ever really yours.

Today

Picture the worst plausible reassignment at your work. Name the one thing in it they still couldn't take.
