Day 327
The work will keep
The thing you can't stop thinking about will look small on Friday.
This is the hardest place to switch off: the unfinished thing that feels enormous right now. The bid that's due. The mistake you have to fix. The shift you mishandled and keep re-running. It sits on your chest at midnight and insists it's the most important thing in the world, that you cannot rest until it's solved. The forklift operator lies awake over the count that didn't match. The owner stares at the ceiling over one bad review.
Marcus, who governed an empire and never reached the bottom of his to-do list, used to widen the frame on himself: "Soon, very soon, thou wilt be ashes, or a skeleton, and either a name or not even a name" (Meditations 5.33, Long). Not morbid — clarifying. The thing keeping you up tonight is real, but it is not the size your 1 a.m. mind says it is. Set against the whole of your life, it's a Tuesday.
This is the keystone of the week: the temperance of stopping while the work is still undone. It will always be undone. The skill is closing it anyway — finishing for the day, not finishing forever.
The work will keep. It kept for Marcus. It'll keep for you.
Today
Tonight, when the unfinished thing reaches for you, answer it once: it can wait until I'm back. Then put it down and let the day end.
