Day 337

Nothing out there exists to inflate you

The win is real. It's still not a reason to swell.

The praise lands and something lifts in your chest. A manager says you ran the best shift all month. A regular tells the barista they make the only coffee worth the drive. A customer leaves a five-star review with your name in it. The good thing is genuine, and the pull is immediate: stand a little taller, hold it a little tighter, start to believe it says something large about you.

Epictetus turns that pull on its head. "As a mark is not set up for the sake of missing the aim, so neither does the nature of evil exist in the world" (Enchiridion 27, Carter). The world wasn't built to trip you, he means — and it wasn't built to crown you either. A good review is not a verdict on your worth. A target on the wall is just a target. You aimed and hit; fine. Nothing out there was placed there to puff you up.

This is the week's whole move, and it begins here: meet a good outcome the same steady way you'd meet a bad one. Take the win, do the next thing, stay the same size.

The applause is information, not altitude. You don't have to rise to meet it.

Today

When something goes well today, say a plain thank-you and move straight to the next task — no victory lap in your head.
