Week 42

Days 288–294 · Temperance

  1. Day 288

    The man who craves more

Poverty isn't having little. It's needing more.

You got the raise and the relief lasted about a month. Then the new number became the normal number, and a slightly bigger one started glowing just out of reach. The line cook eyes the sous job. The driver wants the newer rig. The nurse who… Read Day 288

  2. Day 289

    Use, not display

What's it for? Not what does it say.

Look at the tools around you. The mechanic eyeing a roll cabinet twice the size of the job. The hairstylist talked into the premium shears. The new hire who spent a week's pay on a watch that does nothing the cheap one didn't. Half of what… Read Day 289

  3. Day 290

    The foot and the shoe

Your body already knows the right size. Listen to it.

Here's a strange thing about needs: they have a built-in limit, and we keep blowing past it. You can only eat so much before more food stops being a meal and becomes a problem. You can only wear one coat at a time. The body draws a clear… Read Day 290

  4. Day 291

    The line just above poverty

How much is enough? Less than you think, and you can name it.

"Enough" sounds vague until you try to put a figure on it. So Seneca put one on it. He said the best amount to own is enough to keep you out of poverty — and not much past that. Close to the edge, on purpose, not buried in surplus. Read Day 291

  5. Day 292

    Nature's bill is small

What you actually need is cheap. The rest is markup.

Here's the keystone of the week, the one to carry onto every shift. The things that keep a human alive and working are nearly free. Water. Plain food. A roof. Rest. Nature's bill is short and the prices are low. The crushing costs come… Read Day 292

  6. Day 293

    For shelter, not for show

The upgrade that nobody else even notices.

Off the clock now, where enough gets quietly eaten alive. The apartment was fine until a friend's was nicer. The car ran great until the neighbor parked a new one. The phone worked until the ad said it didn't. This is lifestyle creep, and… Read Day 293

  7. Day 294

A decision you make again tomorrow

Enough isn't a place you arrive. It's a line you keep redrawing.

Look back at the week. The want that runs ahead of the raise. The test of use over show. The foot that sizes the shoe. The line just above poverty. The short, cheap list of what you truly need. Then last night, the upgrade bought for an… Read Day 294
